Project SPEKTRALE 11 - Art and Science
TH Wildau, State of Brandenburg, 2024
Floor mosaic on concrete foundation
Material: door leaves, cupboard walls, plywood, 18 m x 3 m
The mosaic was laid out on an elongated concrete base surrounded by gravel in front of a factory building of the former Wildau locomotive factory. The work should artistically reflect the exhibition theme of Spektrale 11 in Wildau between science and art, culture and migration, nature and climate. Collected wooden elements such as old door leaves made of solid wood or with honeycomb filling, plywood panels, coated cupboard walls made of chipboard were sawn up and assembled into a puzzle according to the dimensions of the base.
The ornaments that were used include geometric construction principles from several cultures and time periods, which are similar in that they can be continued indefinitely without forming a repeat: the modern Penrose and Einstein parquetry (1974 and 2023) meet the Persian Girih ornament (12th century), which has astonishing mathematical parallels, and the Chinese puzzle Tangram (8th century BC) as well as the golden ratio, which has brought together nature, mathematics and art since Greek antiquity.
The patterns flow into one another and merge into an overall structure (hyperpattern), in which the patterns appear and then dissolve again. In the transitions between the pattern fragments asymmetric polygonal forms emerge that continue the entropic fragmentation into countless individual parts like the crackling of a dried-out soil. The long mosaic rectangle in Wildau shows, so to speak, a section of an infinite expansion that can be continued in thought....
